Causes of Reduced Sex Drive that May Affect Your Sexual Wellness

Besides the usual function of procreation, sex plays a major role in your overall well-being. Sexual wellness is more than avoiding unplanned pregnancies and diseases. It is about acknowledging that sex is an important aspect of your life. Whether you achieve your sexual satisfaction through intercourse, masturbation, and other sexual activities, sex has been proven to preserve your heart health, encourage bonding in a relationship, boost your immunity, and improve your mental well-being.

With so many factors at stake, hormonal imbalance is the major cause of reduced sexual desire. Your body can begin to respond differently to sexual stimuli or not respond at all. When this happens, Atlanta sexual wellness team has several treatments to restore your sexual function and wellness. Some of the major causes of reduced sex drive that can be a cause of concern include;

1. Low testosterone

Testosterone levels are highly attributed to reduced or increased libido. If your testosterone levels are low, chances are your sex drive is something you need to work on. Low testosterone levels can occur following an injury, inflammation, or tumors in your testicles. Other causes of hormonal imbalance include diseases such as liver cirrhosis. The liver plays a major role in the breakdown of estrogen. When this is not possible, estrogen levels go up and suppress the levels of testosterone, causing a decline in your sexual function.

2. Menopause

When a woman hits her menopause days, her sex drive greatly reduces due to the decline of estrogen levels. Low estrogen causes vaginal dryness, which can, in turn, cause pain and discomfort during sex. Women also have a good amount of testosterone which gives a boost to their sexual desires. When menopause strikes, testosterone levels go low and, consequently, the desire to have sex.

3. Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction, or the inability to maintain a fruitful erection, can result due to low testosterone levels. Once a man experiences erectile dysfunction, his need for sex is crushed. This is because they do not want to experience shame again, and they would rather shun their desires to soothe their ego. It becomes impossible to attain an erection because their confidence has previously failed them.

4. Stress and depression

People react differently to stress. When you are stressed, your body releases the hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which can interfere with your sexual function. Moreover, stress will cause a decline in your libido by distracting your mind from craving sexual contact. Depression also alters your body’s biochemistry and reduces your libido. Moreover, some medication used to manage depression has reduced sexual desire as a side effect.

5. Health Conditions

Chronic conditions like cancer and renal disease will suppress your testosterone levels and consequently reduce your libido. This is because your body looks for a coping mechanism to survive the ailments rather than focus on arousal and sexual satisfaction.

If your sexual function has been of concern lately, and you are unable to perform or fulfill your sexual urge like you used to, it is good to address the root cause of the issue. Low sex drive can be a short-lived condition, or it can be a long-term issue. The good news is a wrecked sex drive is something that can be mended through a couple of non-surgical treatments. Reach out and have your hormone health checked to improve your sexual wellness.
