Understanding the Basics: House Framing Installation Explained

Introduction

This is just going to go over the basics of House framing installation. Building a house is a huge undertaking. The house is made up of so many different components, windows, doors, roofs, and framing, just to name a few. I’ll try and write out just the importance of a good framing install. And this will also touch on newer alternatives to wood framing as well.

The Importance of Framing

This is what the house will be built on, it’s basically the skeleton that holds everything. It’s what everything else is built onto. So it needs to be good. It needs to handle the weight of the structure being built on it. It needs to be level and square. Professional quality craftsmanship is pretty much what you’re going for during these steps. Cause while the other steps can be fixed if done wrong, a crappy frame will result in a house that’s going to fall down. You deserve for insurance to not even fix it, even if they did think it was a wind gust, the engineer would make even more sure it is totally their fault. Or if they don’t they’re an idiot. If designed improperly it could not shift the loads the way they should react. This could cause the structure to sink itself into the ground. It could warp across time as the wood beings to warp. It could withhold moisture allowing the fungus to form. Those last two are just a result of the first a structural integrity. It could not be square because it causes trouble with doors, seal doors, break doors etc, same with windows. If contracted improperly.

The Right Materials

Most houses are framed using wood, because: in addition to being pretty available, it’s pretty great as the job. The most common types of lumber used in framing are SPF (Spruce, Pine, Fir) and Douglas Fir. LVL (laminated veneer lumber) also a good material, nice and strong. And while a good wood frame is probably the best way to frame, Steel framing is gaining popularity in modern home designs for its straight smooth straight ways and some might speak of its environmentally friendliness. Extremely straight, won’t rot from the moisture, pest resistant, won’t warp or diminish,  won’t burn. Conventionally framed houses use lumber beyond minimum code to deliver expected life for the structure. That seriously is not a selling point to me tho, just think of all of the electricity used to produce the wood to make the steel. We also use many engineered wood products like wood I-joists and LVL’s (laminated veneer lumber). These products also have higher strength properties and are used in longer spans and higher load applications. After the Blog this product called SIP which is going to be huge in building. It’s like a long span roof/ceiling height floor joist system, just a little bit more complex

Laying the Foundation

Make sure your foundation, preferably concrete, is solid and level so that it will be the base on which the rest of your structure will be made. Make sure you follow the specific requirements and codes for your project. You need something to hold all those stickies you’re going to be leaving up for yourself in a few days after you do this. But at least you have something to hold the lumber – not letting the bugs eat it. You now need to attach some Sill Plates, this is your connection to the foundation

Framing the Walls

The walls are the partitions of boxing that you’ll be making for each room. In other words, the walls hold up your house (pretty much). Sounds pretty important, right ? After you start stacking the sheetrock, you’re going to figure out what the walls initially went in looking like. But we are teaching you how to get that up. They are pretty much the primary load (ex weight) bearing items. These include 2×4 and 2×6 walls. A lot of modern homes can utilize 2×6 walls which allow for more insulation making your house more energy efficient.

Constructing the Roof Framing

The roof is going to be a pretty simple construction job as well. Make sure you plan your roof prior to this because there are more than one design. Then we just simply install trusses. Some companies like to frame a roof with stick framing. But proper trusses are the easiest and least confusing system and very efficient as well.

Incorporating Openings and Supports

Besides your primary load bearing items, you’ll have to install door and window frames. These of course go into the walls. Some of these load bearing walls require extra support such as double or triple studs – and maybe even headers.

Finishing Touches and Inspections

After your structure is framed, you’re not quite done with construction. And now you need to move forward with things like insulation and exterior and interior wall coverings and other building systems unrelated to the actual structure of the building. Your framing at this point will get inspected by your state’s building authority before moving forward.

Conclusion

The installation of the framing of a house is very important to the proper construction, basic knowledge of house framing installation will make sure that your building project is up to your standard. The materials chosen, how they are measured and connected correctly are all the factors of house framing installation. All of these things are very important in making your house stable and ready to withstand normal wear and tear for years and years to come, not only for you.
